dublab presents...SECONDHAND SURESHOTS (preview) from dublab on Vimeo.
Now for my review:
I've been waiting for this documentary to come out for quite some time. I first heard about it around 2008. Here's the premise: 4 DJ/producers were given $5 to buy 5 records from a local thrift store and produce their own song only using samples on the record, chopped up and interpret it in their own style. Great idea, right? This is going to be good. Some of LA's best "underground" producers being put to the test. So on occasion, I would check in at Poo-Bah Records (Where many of the artist work at) to see when this anticipated documentary would come out. They kept saying...soon. So finally, March 2010 Stones Throw Records recently released this Dublab produced project. Here's my personal opinion.
Pros:
-Great DJ/Producers to focus on for this project
-Funny commentary from J.Rocc
-Final Songs created by DJ/Producers: Fresh!
-Bonus songs, mega mix by Kutmah
-Interesting to see their thought process of how they dig for records
Cons:
-Way too short (Running time: approx. 29 mins)
-Alot of filler featurettes that could of been longer (misleading when they say over 2 hours of music, bonus songs, etc..)
-Wanted to see more of the production styles, samples used, and equipment used
-Expected a steak dinner, got a fatty piece of Korean BBQ with a bunch of side dishes
-The trailer showed the best parts of the documentary
-Not worth the $20 price tag (should of waited for a used copy)
